Supplies:
6" x 6" Cube (tissue box cover or planter)
50 yds. 4mm-5mm cord(shown
in beige and in gold twisted polyolefin)
2, 6" plastic
square "rings"
4, 5" plastic
square "rings"
(on samples, yellow marbelized used with gold cord, brown marbelized
used
with beige cord)
5" x 5" cube (tissue dispenser or cotton ball box)
44 yds. 3mm-3 1/2mm
cord (shown in beige knitted polyolefin)
2, 5" plastic
square "rings"
4, 4" plastic
square "rings"
(white marbelizedand brown marbelized shown)
4"x 4" cube (Q-tip or small item box)
35 yds. 2mm cord (shown
in navy twisted polyolefin)
2, 4" plastic
square "rings"
4, 3" plastic square "rings"
(blue marbella shown)
NOTES: Tie all knots tightly and close together. Cord lengths
for 5"x 5" and 4"x 4" cubes given in parentheses
and brackets, respectively, after lengths for 6"x 6" cube.
STEP 1: Place one larger square on table and place 4 smaller
squares along each side of it (see fig. 1)
STEP 2: Cut sixteen 2-yd. (1 3/4-yd.)(1 1/3-yd.) cords,
and cut eight
2 1/4-yd. (2-yd.)(1 2/3-yd.) cords.
STEP 3: Mount the cords to the adjoining pairs of plastic squares,
used as one filler, with reverse Lark's Heads (see knotting section)
plus a Half Hitch (see knotting section), on each side of each larks
head (tying with each working cord), as follows: Mount 4 shorter
cords with one longer cord on each end to each side of the center
square (along with the adjoining side of another square), so cord-ends
face out from center square toward smaller squares(see fig.1)
STEP 4: Fold the 4 smaller squares down at right angles so the
larger middle square rests on them and unit forms a cube(see fig.2).
Throughout pattern, follow steps 5-7 for filling in one side, then
repeat same steps for second, third, and fourth sides.
STEP 5: Tie 2 alternating rows of square knot sinnets (see knotting
section), 2 knots per sinnet, starting with a row of 3 sinnets(ending
with a row of 2 sinnets).
STEP 6: Use the "Hitching to Frame" technique (see
knotting section) to tightly Double Half Hitch the first and last,
then the next-to-first and next-to-last cords to the sides of the
square. Bring these 4 cords back inside square to be used in next
row of sinnets.
STEP 7: Tie 3 more alternating rows of 2-Square-Knot sinnet,
repeating step 6 after the second of these rows.
STEP 8: Place the unused larger square under the smaller squares
to form bottom. Then tightly Double Half Hitch each cord to both
plastic forms (bottom of side square and side of bottom square),
as one, working from center of each square outward toward corners
of cube.
STEP 9: Turn cube upside down. Tightly tie together each cord
from the "east" side and its opposing cord from the "west"
side, using a square knot without fillers. Trim cords near knots
and glue or fuse ends.
STEP 10: Repeat step 9 with all "north" and "south"
cords. Trim and glue ends.
STEP 11: If cube is used to store small items, cut out a square
of plastic or waxed milk carton paper to fit inside bottom to prevent
contents from falling through the bottom. (a small plastic bag can
also be used as a liner, for cotton balls, tissue, Q-tips, etc.)
Lids for cube projects
Variation #1 (for tissue dispenser-5"x 5" cube)
Supplies:
9 yds. 3mm-3 1/4mm cord(to match cube)
1, 5" plastic square "ring" (to match cube)
STEP 1: Cut six 1 1/2-yd. cords and fold each in half.
STEP 2: Mount 4 cords, with reverse lark's heads, to one side
of the square ring. Then add a half hitch on each side of each lark's
head (tying with each working cord). Slide half the cords to the
left side and half to the right side, leaving about 1" space
between groups, for tissue opening.
STEP 3: Place the square on top of the finished cube. Form hinges
by mounting one new cord onto both adjoining corners of the two
5" top squares(used as one), with reverse larks heads plus
a half hitch with each working cord.
STEP 4: Number working cords on left 1-6 (this includes mounted
"hinge" cords).Number working cords on right 6-1. Tie
enough alternating sinnets, of 2 square knots each, with each group,
to reach opposite side of square (tie sinnets with cords 1-4, then
3-6, then 1-4, etc.)
STEP 5: Double half hitch each cord to opposit side of lid-square
only; then trim cords near double half hitches, and glue or fuse
ends.
STEP 6: Lift lid and place loosely folded inter-locked tissues,
from a commercial box, all at once on a diagonal inside cube. Place
lid down and pull top tissue up through space between the 2 knotted
sections.
Variation #2 Solid Lid with handle
(This variation can be detached or hinged and clasped. Instructions
can be adapted to all 3 sizes of cubes.) Shown on cotton ball holder
and Q-tip holder.
Supplies:
Note:Refer to basic cube instructions for appropriate cord thickness
and lengths.
1 plastic square ring-same size as top square of finished cube
2 cords(diameter to match cube cord), same length as longer cords
for cube
6 cords (same diameter as for cube), same length as shorter cords
for cube
1 large bead or 2" square ring for handle
1, 20mm bead for button and 1 yd. cord, for clasp (optional)
STEP 1: Cut cords as described in materials list. Fold each
in half, and mount each to one side of
the new square, longer cords on each end, with a reverse larks head
plus a half hitch on each side of heach larks head
(tying with each working cord).
STEP 2: TIe enough alternating rows of 2-square-knotsinnets
to fill square: start with a row of 4 sinnets, and double half hitch
the first 2 and last 2 cords to the sides of the square, after every
other row (after
each 4-sinnet row, on level with each 3-sennet row).
STEP 3: Double half hitch each cord to the opposite side of
the square, trim excess. amd glue or fuse ends.
STEP 4: With cord scraps, tie the large bead or small square
ring to the middle of lid.
STEP 5: Hinge and clasp option: mount 2 longer scraps, with
reverse larks heads, near the corneres of one
side of the lid and to the adjoining corners to the top of the square
of the cube, at the same time.
This will be back. Tie ends together on inside of box and trim ends.
STEP 6: Tie a 20mm bead, with scraps, to the center of the front
side of the cube (side opposite hinges)
STEP 7: Form a clasp by folding a 1-yd cord in half and tying
an overhand knot (see knotting section) near the folded end, making
a loop large enough to fit over bead. Double half hitch ends to
lid, above bead
